Branded Search Now Triggers Google AI Overviews

A branded search is someone typing your business name. For years that query was the safe one. They already knew you. Google sent them to your site. On October 1, 2026, Search Engine Land reported DemandSphere data that broke that assumption: by late September, Google AI Overviews were showing on more than 80% of the branded queries DemandSphere tracked, up from about 26% at the start of the month.

That matters now because the answer box can sit above your homepage, your Google Business Profile, and your ads. Google has not announced a change that explains the jump. Click data was not in the study. What you can do this week is check what Google says when someone searches your name in Dallas, and make sure your own pages are the clearest source.

This guide covers the October 1 numbers, what they do not prove, the searches to run for a Dallas business, how to write a page Google can cite, and the fixes that belong on the site rather than in a prompt.

Quick answer: As of October 1, 2026, DemandSphere saw AI Overviews on more than 80% of tracked branded queries, after about 26% at the start of September. Search your own name, read the overview, and make your homepage and service pages the source you want cited.

  • Presence peaked at 90.48% on September 27, then sat at 80.23% and 82.06% on the next two days.
  • A separate check by Chris Long of Nectiv found AI Overviews for 93 of 100 enterprise brands. That test did not measure clicks.
  • Google's own guidance is still ordinary SEO: be indexed, be eligible for a snippet, and do not opt the site out of generative AI features in Search Console.

What changed by October 6, 2026

The jump was late September. Danny Goodwin's October 1 report in Search Engine Land says DemandSphere tracked branded keywords once a day, across markets and devices, in DemandMetrics. An AI Overview counted if one appeared, whether or not it cited the brand. Through much of September those overviews showed on roughly 27% to 35% of the tracked branded queries. Then the rate moved fast.

The daily marks are specific. Presence hit 69.21% on September 26 and 90.48% on September 27. It stayed high at 80.23% on September 28 and 82.06% on September 29. Search Engine Land says Google had not announced a change tied to that increase.

A second test found the same pattern on big brands. Chris Long, co-founder of Nectiv, checked 100 enterprise brands with SerpApi and found AI Overviews for 93 of them, including Reddit, Salesforce, Mailchimp, and Facebook. He also found them for smaller companies. That is a presence test, not a traffic test.

What the numbers do not say

They do not say your clicks fell. Long warned that branded overviews could reduce click-through from name searches. Search Engine Land is explicit: neither his test nor DemandSphere's data measured clicks. Treat a scary percentage as a reason to look at your own Search Console, not as a forecast for a Dallas plumber or a Deep Ellum restaurant.

They do not say every name search in Dallas looks the same. DemandSphere's set is branded keywords across markets and devices. Your category, your city, and whether you have a Google Business Profile will change the page. A one-location shop and a national software brand are not the same query.

!

Do not opt out on a hunch. Search Console has a generative AI control. Include is the default. Switching a property to Exclude pulls it out of AI Overviews and AI Mode. That is a real switch. Read what the overview says about you before you hide the site from the feature.

Search your own name the way a customer does

Use a clean window. Open a private window, set the location to Dallas if the tool allows it, and search the exact name on the sign, the name people misspell, and the name plus the neighborhood. Write down three things: whether an AI Overview appears, which sentences it uses, and which links it shows.

Then search the job, not the name. "Website designer Dallas," "HVAC repair Oak Cliff," "taco shop Deep Ellum." The branded overview and the category overview are different problems. The category query is still where a new customer starts. The name query is where a referred customer confirms you are real.

Check the sources. If the overview cites a directory, a review site, or an old press page instead of your site, that is the gap. Your page has to be easier to quote than the directory.

Write pages Google can cite

Answer in the first screen. Say who you are, where you work, and what you do in plain sentences. A Dallas reader, and a model summarizing the page, should not have to scroll past a slogan to find the fact.

One page, one job. A homepage can introduce the studio. A service page should answer the service. InterGlobal's web design and Next.js website pages exist so a query about a site has a page that matches it, instead of a paragraph buried on the home page.

Put the facts in sentences, not only in a logo. Address, service area, hours, and what the engagement includes should be text. An image of a business card is not a source.

+

Match the overview's question. If Google answers "Is this company in Dallas?" your page should say Dallas in a sentence, with the neighborhood if that is how people search. If it answers "What do they build?" name the work: sites, apps, AI, brand.

For the longer pattern of answer-style pages, see the answer engine optimization playbook and the earlier note on AI Overviews that auto-expand. This page is the branded-query update. Those pages cover the August layout change and the broader citation habit.

Fix the site, not just the blog

The homepage is the branded result. If someone searches your name and the overview is vague, the homepage is usually why. Title, H1, and the first paragraph should agree. Do not make the title a tagline and hide the company name in the logo file.

Service pages need to stand alone. A visitor from an overview may land in the middle of the site. Each service page should say the offer, who it is for, and how to start, without requiring the homepage.

Proof belongs on the work. Link named projects. The work index is there so a cited claim can point at a real job instead of an adjective.

Search Console is the scoreboard. Open the generative AI performance report if your property has it, and compare branded queries in the regular performance report before and after late September. If clicks on your name moved, you will see it there. If they did not, do not invent a crisis from a third-party presence chart.

Ads, the homepage, and the brand query

A brand ad does not replace the page. Paying for your own name can still catch the click under the overview. It does not fix a wrong sentence in the overview. Fix the page that should be the source, then decide if the ad is worth the click you still want.

Keep the name consistent. The Google Business Profile, the site, and the ads should use the same business name. A mismatch gives the overview two versions to blend.

Do not stuff the city into every line. Say Dallas where it is true. A page that repeats the city to chase the query is harder to cite, not easier.

A Dallas checklist for this month

This week's steps

  1. Search the name. Private window, Dallas, exact name, common misspelling, and name plus neighborhood.
  2. Save the overview. Note the sentences and the links. Screenshot it with the date.
  3. Compare to your homepage. If the overview is missing a fact you want known, add that fact in a sentence on the page you control.
  4. Check Search Console. Branded queries, and the generative AI report if it is on the property. Do not turn the site off to feel safe.
  5. Give each service its own page. The overview should have a URL that answers one job.

Questions Dallas owners ask

Did Google announce this branded-search change?

Search Engine Land reported on October 1, 2026 that Google had not announced a change tied to the late-September jump in DemandSphere's branded AI Overview rate.

Does an AI Overview on my name mean I lost the click?

Nobody in the DemandSphere report or in Chris Long's 100-brand check measured clicks. Look at your own Search Console branded queries before you assume the box stole the visit.

Should I turn off AI Overviews for my site?

Search Console can exclude a property from generative AI features. That removes you from those surfaces. Read the overview first. Exclusion is a choice, not the default fix.

What should the homepage say?

The business name, the city, and what you do, in sentences near the top. A logo image is not a sentence Google can quote.

Is this the same as the Show More change?

No. Some overviews started auto-expanding in late August 2026. This page is about name searches triggering an overview at all. Both can be true on the same results page.

How often should I check?

Once this week, then when you change the homepage or the Google Business Profile. Save the date on the screenshot so you can compare the wording later.

Build the page you want cited.

A clear service page beats a slogan when someone searches your name.
