Direct Offers Just Showed Up in Google AI Mode

Direct Offers are a Google Ads test for showing a promotion inside AI Mode. On October 7, 2026, Search Engine Land's Anu Adegbola reported a beta "Direct offer" asset in the Google Ads assets list, next to promotions, messages, and lead forms. The shopper can see "Claim one-time code" under a sponsored result. The code is only as good as the page it opens.

This is not a free listing feature. Adegbola wrote that Direct Offers serve only on campaigns using AI Max or text customization. The advertiser supplies an internal name, a final URL, and a short description. Google's AI uses that description to decide when the offer is relevant and can write the line the shopper sees. You can set the incentive and upload single-use codes in a CSV. You can add terms, a terms URL, dates, and a cap on value or on the number of claims.

This guide is for a Dallas shop or service business that heard "AI Mode ads" this week and needs to know what is actually shipping, what is still a test, and what has to be true on the website before a code goes live.

Quick answer: Direct Offers are a beta ad asset, reported October 7, 2026, that can show a one-time code under a sponsored AI Mode result. They require AI Max or text customization. The landing page has to show the same offer.

  • The pilot is older. Google Marketing Live coverage on May 20, 2026 still described Direct Offers as a U.S. pilot.
  • Google's AI can write the offer line from your description. It should not invent a discount you did not provide.
  • A code that opens a page with a different price is a trust problem, not a growth tactic.

What's in this article?

What shipped on October 7

An asset, not a new search engine. The October 7 report is about a control inside Google Ads. It is labeled beta. It is not a statement that every Dallas query now shows a coupon.

AI Max or text customization. That is the gate Adegbola reported. If the campaign is not on one of those, the asset does not serve. Turning on AI Max is a separate decision about how much of the ad text Google can rewrite. Do not flip it only because a blog mentioned a code.

The May pilot is the backstory. Search Engine Land's May 20, 2026 piece on Google Marketing Live described Direct Offers as still a U.S. pilot, with Gemini assembling offers from what advertisers upload, plus talk of native checkout for merchants on the Universal Commerce Protocol. The October 7 asset is the next reported step, not proof that checkout inside AI Mode is live for every shop.

October 7, 2026. That is the Search Engine Land report of the Direct Offer asset inside Google Ads. Treat it as a test you may or may not see in the account.

What the shopper sees

A sponsored result, then a code. The report says an eligible promotion can appear under the ad as "Claim one-time code." Opening it shows the offer and the code, plus a button to the advertiser's site. Organic results are a different box. Do not confuse this with the unpaid AI Overview on a name search, which is covered in the branded search guide.

The line can be generated. You write a description. Google's AI can turn that into the sentence on screen and can pick which incentive to show from the ones you added. If the description is sloppy, the sentence will be sloppy in public.

Single-use codes are the point of the CSV. A public code posted on ten blogs is not what this asset is for. If you upload one-time codes, the page has to accept them. A code that the cart rejects is a broken ad.

A navy laptop, a small ticket, and a storefront on cream paper, for an ad offer that has to match the shop.

What you still control

The offer, the URL, and the cap. Name, final URL, description, incentive type and value, terms, dates, and a limit by value or by number of claims. That list is from the October 7 report. The cap matters. An AI that shows the offer more often than you funded is why the limit fields exist.

The AI does not get to invent the deal. Google's January 2026 pilot notes, from the company's own Direct Offers introduction, said the system relies on the Merchant Center feed and the codes you upload, and that the AI will not invent a deal. Hold the October test to the same standard. If a line appears that you did not authorize, pause the asset.

You can miss the test entirely. Beta means the menu item may not be in your account. Searching the help center and finding nothing is not a failure. It means you are not in the test.

The page the button opens

The final URL has to be the offer. If the code is 15 percent off one line, the page has to show that line, that price, and a way to apply the code. A homepage with a slogan burns the click.

Say it in sentences. Product name, price before the offer, price with the code, and the end date. A shopper who claims a code and a system that summarizes the page should see the same facts. That is the same standard as the Retail Ready guide: lessons and ads do not replace the page.

Do not let a generated line outrun the shelf. If the item is gone, end the asset. An AI Mode offer for a product you cannot sell is how you train a customer not to trust the next one.

Match the Maps rule too. A dated discount does not belong in the Google listing description. It can belong in an offer post and, if you are in this test, in a Direct Offer. Read what the listing can no longer say before you paste the code in three places.

This is not the map listing

Ads and the profile are different products. Direct Offers are paid. The Business Profile is the free record. Cleaning one does not fund the other. A Dallas service business with no ecommerce cart may never need this asset. A shop with a real SKU and a real code might.

AI Mode can also try to call a business. Google's help on AI Mode says it can check local availability, appointments, and pricing, and that it may call when the facts are not online. The practical response is still to publish hours, stock if you can, and a page that answers. A call from Google is a backup, not a business model.

Organic pages still have to be real. The September spam update finished October 8. A pile of city pages built to "support" the ad is the wrong companion. The spam update check is the filter.

What a Dallas shop should do

If you sell products online. Look in Assets for a beta Direct offer. If it is there, write the description yourself, point it at the product URL, cap the claims, and buy the code path on the site before you upload the CSV.

If you sell appointments. You may not see the asset, and you may not want it. A service page with the offer, the hours, and a form will do more than a code the calendar cannot redeem. AI integrations belong on that form, after the offer is true.

If you are getting ready for market. Dallas Market Center's Retail Ready lessons do not build the product page. Have the page before you spend on a code. The work index is how we show finished sites, not hypothetical offers.

Read the generated line before you leave it on. You wrote the description. You still have to read the sentence Google shows. If it overclaims, fix the description or pause the asset.

Before you turn it on

A short preflight

  1. Confirm the asset is in the account. Beta means it may be missing. Do not rebuild the site for a button you cannot see.
  2. Write the offer in one sentence. What, how much, until when.
  3. Open the final URL in a private window. The same sentence has to be on the page.
  4. Test one code. The cart or the form has to accept it.
  5. Set a cap. Value or number of claims. Then watch it the first day.

Key takeaways

  • On October 7, 2026, Search Engine Land reported a beta Direct Offer asset for AI Mode ads.
  • It serves with AI Max or text customization, and it can show a one-time code under a sponsored result.
  • You provide the offer, the URL, the codes, and the cap. Read the line Google generates.
  • The page has to honor the code. The map listing is a separate product and should not carry the dated sale.

Questions Dallas owners ask

Is Direct Offers live for every Google Ads account?

No. The October 7, 2026 report describes a beta asset. The May 20, 2026 Marketing Live coverage still called the broader program a U.S. pilot. If you do not see it, you are not in the test.

Does this replace my Shopping campaigns?

The company's January pilot description said Direct Offers sit alongside Performance Max and standard Shopping. The October report does not say to turn those off. It adds an asset with its own rules.

Can Google invent a discount?

The January pilot said the AI would not invent a deal and would use your feed and your codes. The October asset still starts from a description and incentives you enter. Read the public line anyway.

What is AI Max?

It is Google's campaign setting that lets Google customize ad text. The October 7 report says Direct Offers only serve on campaigns using AI Max or text customization. Turning it on changes more than this one asset. Decide that on purpose.

Should a plumber use this?

Probably not, unless you sell a specific booked offer with a code the calendar accepts. A service page and a correct map listing will do more. Start with the local SEO services guide.

Where do I put the same sale on Maps?

In an offer post with dates, and on the website. Not in the listing description. That split was reported on October 6, 2026.

Build the page the code opens.

A clear product or service URL is web design work. The ad can wait until that URL is true.
