Google AI Max, DSA Sunset, and Meta Placement Loss: Dallas SMB Guide 2026
Starting 1 September 2026, Google auto-migrates campaign-level Broad Match and legacy Automatically Created Assets Search campaigns into Google AI Max. If you run ads for a Dallas restaurant, roofing company, or salon, this is not a cosmetic update. It is a control shift. Platforms now choose more of the query match, the creative assets, the placements, and the bid logic.
The same season is crowding the calendar. New campaign-level Broad Match and Automatically Created Assets Search campaigns closed on 3 August 2026. Dynamic Search Ads are being replaced, with in-account notices to upgrade before auto-migration in February 2027. Microsoft Advertising already ships AI Max as the GA default. Advertisers reported Meta placement exclusions disappearing around 25 August 2026, swapped for value rules. Amazon began attaching creator placements to Sponsored Products without an opt-in.
This guide explains what changed, what is confirmed versus staged, and what a DFW owner should actually do. The durable move is not a clever bid tweak. It is a conversion-ready site, first-party CRM, and clean conversion tracking so the models have a signal you own.
Quick answer: Google AI Max is absorbing campaign-level Broad Match and legacy Automatically Created Assets Search campaigns starting 1 September 2026. DSA is on a path to replacement with auto-migration targeted for February 2027. Dallas SMBs should stop optimizing for leftover levers and invest in landing pages, first-party CRM, and conversion tracking.
- New campaign-level Broad Match and ACA Search creation closed 3 August 2026.
- Check Google in-account notices and upgrade DSA before February 2027 auto-migration.
- Microsoft AI Max is generally available and on by default.
- Meta placement-exclusion reports from ~25 August 2026 are staged and unconfirmed as a general release. Treat value rules as a watch item, not a settled product fact.
- Amazon creator placements can appear on Sponsored Products without opt-in.
- Restaurants, roofers, and salons lose query, asset, and placement control. Pages and owned data matter more than bid micro-management.

What Google AI Max changes on Search
The core change: Google AI Max is the destination for Search campaigns that still used campaign-level Broad Match and legacy Automatically Created Assets. Starting 1 September 2026, Google auto-migrates those eligible campaigns. You do not get an indefinite hold on the old structure.
Creation already closed: On 3 August 2026, Google stopped new campaign-level Broad Match and Automatically Created Assets Search campaigns. If your agency still talks as if those settings are a planning default, the plan is already stale.
What AI Max actually controls
Query coverage: Broad Match at campaign level was already a wide net. AI Max continues that philosophy: the system expands which searches can trigger ads, then uses your assets, landing pages, and conversion data to decide where spend is "useful." Manual keyword lists still exist in many accounts, but they are no longer the center of gravity.
Assets: Automatically Created Assets were Google writing extra headlines and descriptions from your site and ads. Folding that into AI Max means more of the copy the customer sees is generated or selected by the model, not by your Monday morning spreadsheet.
What you still own: Brand safety settings, conversion actions, audience signals, budgets, and the destination URL. Those last two only help if the page and the CRM event are real. A Dallas roofer sending storm-lead traffic to a homepage with no form tracking will train the model on noise.
Who gets auto-migrated
In scope: Search campaigns that still rely on campaign-level Broad Match and legacy Automatically Created Assets. Google is not asking you to invent a new product name in the UI. It is collapsing those setups into AI Max.
Out of the guesswork: Do not assume every Performance Max, branded exact-match, or paused draft is in the same bucket. Open the account, read the migration notice, and export a campaign list before 1 September 2026 if you have not already.
The creation freeze was 3 August 2026. Auto-migration starts 1 September 2026. If your DFW account still has campaign-level Broad Match or legacy ACA on Search, treat that as a live operations ticket, not a blog topic for Q4.
What to audit in Google Ads this week
Campaign inventory: Filter Search campaigns for Broad Match at campaign level and for Automatically Created Assets. Screenshot the settings. Export change history. You want a paper trail when CPA moves after migration.
Conversion actions: Confirm primary conversions are business outcomes (booked table, estimate request, salon appointment), not vanity events (page view, 10-second session). AI Max will optimize to whatever you call a conversion.
Landing page truth: If Google is allowed to generate assets from the site, the site copy must match what you actually sell in Lake Highlands, Plano, or Fort Worth. Stale service areas and missing phone numbers become ad copy.
Pair this Search shift with the Spanish-language Search play we already documented in publicidad en Google para tu negocio. Bilingual DFW demand does not pause while Google rewires match types.
DSA sunset: upgrade before auto-migration
Dynamic Search Ads are being replaced. Google is sending in-account notices to upgrade DSA before auto-migration in February 2027. DSA used your website crawl to pick queries and landing pages. That was convenient when the site was a brochure. It is dangerous when the crawl is thin, duplicated, or out of date.
Why DSA is going away
Overlap with AI Max: DSA's job (let Google pick queries from page content) is the same job AI-driven Search wants to own. Keeping both as first-class campaign types was a dual control surface. Google is collapsing it.
Site quality becomes the keyword list: If your roofing site has one "services" blob and no city pages, DSA (and its successor) will still find queries. They will just be the wrong ones, or they will land on a page that cannot convert.
Upgrade path before February 2027
Do not wait for the auto-migration: In-account notices exist because Google expects you to move on purpose. Auto-migration in February 2027 is the backstop, not the strategy.
Rebuild around URLs you trust: Map every money page: emergency roof leak, menu + reservations, color + cut + color correction, commercial vs residential. Those URLs should be the only destinations the new Search setup can learn from.
Fix crawl junk first: Parameter URLs, expired specials, and "coming soon" pages teach the system to advertise things you do not sell. A conversion-focused website is now part of paid Search hygiene, not a separate brand project.
DSA replacement in one sentence
If Google used to invent queries from your crawl, your crawl is now the creative brief. Clean URLs, unique service copy, and tracked forms are the upgrade. Waiting until February 2027 is how you inherit a migrated campaign with no diagnosis.
DSA vs AI Max for local service businesses
Legacy DSA
Query source: Site crawl and page titles.
Control: URL rules and negatives, with Google picking most headlines from the page.
Failure mode: Thin pages, duplicate services, and crawlable junk ads.
Google AI Max Search
Query source: Model expansion plus your remaining keywords, assets, and conversion data.
Control: Budgets, goals, brand protections, and the pages you feed it.
Failure mode: Optimizing to fake conversions and sending traffic to a homepage that cannot book.
Microsoft AI Max is already the default
GA, default on: Microsoft Advertising AI Max is generally available and on by default. If you still treat Bing and Microsoft Search as a neglected copy of Google with tighter exact match, the account you open today is not that account.
What "default on" means for a Dallas SMB
Imported campaigns inherit the new default: Agencies that clone Google into Microsoft and walk away will import automation they did not design. Review Microsoft AI Max settings on every imported Search campaign, especially branded terms for a Bishop Arts restaurant or a family salon in Arlington.
Same lesson, second auction: Microsoft still has cheaper CPCs in many DFW categories. That only helps if conversion tracking is mirrored. A Google-only offline conversion import leaves Microsoft AI Max guessing.
Microsoft checklist
Confirm AI Max status
Open each Search campaign. Record whether AI Max is on, and whether you have a business reason to constrain it on brand.
Mirror conversion actions
The same booked-job or reservation event should fire in Microsoft as in Google. Do not let one platform optimize to a form submit and the other to a thank-you page view.
Align landing URLs
If Google AI Max is learning from a storm-damage landing page, Microsoft should not still dump that traffic on /services.
Meta placements, exclusions, and value rules
What advertisers reported around 25 August 2026: Placement exclusions disappearing in Ads Manager, replaced by value rules with extreme modifiers (reported in the +1000% to -90% range). This is staged and unconfirmed as a general release. Do not rewrite your entire Meta playbook from a screenshot in a Facebook group. Do inspect your live ad sets.
What placement exclusions used to do
Operator control: Dallas owners used exclusions to keep a high-ticket roofing lead off Audience Network junk, or to keep a salon offer off placements that burned through a $40/day budget. That was a blunt instrument, but it was a lever a human could see.
If the lever is gone in your account: You are no longer choosing "not this surface." You are telling Meta that some impressions are worth more or less via value rules. That is a different mental model. A +1000% rule is not a precision tool. It is a shout.
How to treat value rules until release is confirmed
Log the UI: Screenshot Ad set, Placements, and any Value rules module. Note the date. If exclusions are missing, record whether Advantage+ placements is forced.
Do not copy internet modifiers: A -90% rule on a placement you cannot even verify is a good way to starve a campaign that was actually booking color corrections in Preston Hollow.
Keep creative and the offer as the remaining controls: Social media advertising still responds to a clear offer, a real location, and a landing page that matches the ad. Those do not depend on whether Meta's placement UI is in flux.
Treat late-August 2026 placement-exclusion reports as account-level evidence, not as a finished Meta product announcement. Confirm in your own Business Manager before you tell a client "Meta removed exclusions."
Amazon creator placements on Sponsored Products
Without opt-in: Amazon has been attaching creator placements to Sponsored Products. You did not necessarily check a box that said "put my SKU next to a creator." If you sell products (hot sauce from a Dallas kitchen, salon retail, roofing-adjacent materials through Amazon), your Sponsored Products line can now show up in creator-adjacent inventory.
Why that matters
Brand adjacency: A creator placement can be a gift or a mismatch. You do not get a classic placement report the way a 2019 Amazon Ads power user expected. Watch search term and placement reports for unexpected ASIN neighbors and for spend spikes that do not match your usual keyword set.
Retail vs local service: Most restaurants, roofers, and salons in DFW are not living on Sponsored Products. If you are, do not assume the old "I only buy exact keywords on Amazon" setup still describes the inventory you pay for.
Amazon actions this month
Audit Sponsored Products: Look for creator or store-display style placements in reports. Pause or restructure only after you see wasted spend, not because the feature exists.
Protect brand terms: If creator inventory is mixing with competitor conquesting, tighten brand campaigns rather than turning off all automation in a panic.
The platforms are not asking Dallas operators for permission to automate match, assets, and placements. They are asking for better conversion data. Whoever owns the booking event owns the next twelve months.InterGlobal Team, Dallas

Book a callWhy Dallas restaurants, roofers, and salons lose control
The pattern is the same across three trades: You used to buy a query ("roof repair East Dallas"), exclude a placement (Audience Network), and write the headline. Those three moves are being absorbed into AI Max, default-on Microsoft automation, Meta value rules, and Amazon's extra inventory. The owner still pays. The owner no longer steers the same wheel.
Restaurants
What breaks: Broad query expansion will happily advertise Sunday brunch to people searching catering jobs, or a tasting-menu night to people who want a $12 taco. DSA-style crawl of a PDF menu from 2024 will invent the wrong intent.
What still works: A reservation or order landing page with hours, neighborhood, and a tracked call or OpenTable/toast event. First-party email and SMS from the actual diner, not from a rented pixel.
Roofing
What breaks: Storm-chaser queries, "free inspection" spam, and AI-written assets that promise a price you do not offer in Collin County. Campaign-level Broad Match was already a leak. AI Max without a tight conversion definition makes the leak a firehose.
What still works: One storm-damage page, one insurance-claim page, one commercial page. Form + call tracking into a CRM your estimator actually opens. That is how you stop paying for "roof" clicks that never become a job.
Salons
What breaks: Meta placements that used to be excluded can dump a $200 color offer into cheap inventory. Search assets generated from a site that lists every service equally will bid on "kids haircut" when you need balayage calendar fill.
What still works: Service-specific landing pages, online booking as the primary conversion, and a CRM that knows who is due for a 6-week color, not just who clicked.
DFW is not a generic geo
Dallas, Fort Worth, Plano, Irving, and Arlington do not share one intent mix. If your site and CRM treat them as one "Dallas-Fort Worth" blob, the model will too. City and service URL structure is paid media infrastructure now. See how we approach that on our work.
What still works: pages, CRM, and conversion tracking
Bid tweaks are a diminishing return. When the auction is AI Max on Google, default AI Max on Microsoft, and placement logic you may no longer exclude on Meta, the inputs that still change outcomes are the destination, the owned identity, and the event you ask the platform to maximize.
Landing pages
Match the intent the model will invent: You cannot list every query anymore. You can give Google and Microsoft a small set of excellent URLs: one offer, one proof, one action. That is the same discipline as a paid-social destination, which is why web design and media cannot be separate vendors who never share a Figma file.
Speed, phone, and form: A 4-second mobile page in a hailstorm is a lost roofing lead. A salon page without booking above the fold trains the model that "conversion" is a bounce.
First-party CRM
The pixel is not the customer: Platforms will keep guessing. Your list of people who booked, no-showed, or asked for a second estimate is the dataset you actually own. That is the operating system we laid out in the first-party data operating system guide.
Offline conversion import: When a roofing job is won two weeks after the click, that win must go back to Google and Microsoft. Otherwise AI Max learns from form fills, including tire-kickers.
Conversion tracking
Primary vs secondary: One primary action per campaign goal. Calls of 60+ seconds, qualified form, paid reservation. Secondary events (menu view, gallery click) can inform, but they should not be the optimization target for Google AI Max.
Consent and server-side: iOS and browser limits are not new. If your only signal is a browser pixel, you are underfeeding every AI campaign type this article named.
Key takeaways
- Google AI Max auto-migrates campaign-level Broad Match and legacy Automatically Created Assets Search campaigns starting 1 September 2026. New creation of those setups closed 3 August 2026.
- DSA is being replaced. Use in-account notices and upgrade before February 2027 auto-migration.
- Microsoft AI Max is GA and on by default. Imported accounts are not "set and forget."
- Meta placement-exclusion reports from ~25 August 2026 are staged and unconfirmed as general release. Verify in your own ad sets. Value rules are not a drop-in replacement you copy from a screenshot.
- Amazon can place Sponsored Products in creator inventory without opt-in. Audit reports if you sell on Amazon.
- Dallas restaurants, roofers, and salons lose query, asset, and placement control. Landing pages, first-party CRM, and honest conversion tracking are the remaining strategy.
A 30-day playbook for DFW advertisers
You do not need a 40-page media plan. You need a sequence that matches the dates already on the calendar.
Days 1 to 7: Inventory
Export Google Search campaigns. Flag campaign-level Broad Match and Automatically Created Assets. Read DSA notices. Open Microsoft and confirm AI Max. Screenshot Meta placements. If you sell on Amazon, pull Sponsored Products placement reports.
Days 8 to 14: Tracking truth
List the one business outcome per trade: reservation, estimate, booking. Confirm it fires, it is primary, and it can be imported from the CRM when the job is won.
Days 15 to 21: Pages
Ship or repair three money URLs, not a full rebrand. Remove crawlable junk that DSA or AI Max could advertise. Match ad promises to on-page offers.
Days 22 to 30: Migration posture
Upgrade DSA on purpose. Accept Google AI Max on the campaigns that were going to migrate anyway, with clean goals. Recheck Meta for exclusions vs value rules. Do not spend a week polishing bid adjustments that the model will ignore.
